Your complete guide to beginning partner dance

Everyone starts somewhere. Whether you’ve never stepped on a dance floor or danced at a few weddings, this guide will help you understand what partner dancing is about and how to begin your journey.

Let’s Address Your Fears

?

“I have two left feet”

Good news: dancing is a learned skill, not a talent you’re born with. Daric became a Swiss Champion through consistent practice and coaching — not innate talent. If focus and good instruction can produce world-class dancers, they can absolutely help you find your rhythm.

?

“I don’t have a partner”

Neither do most people who start! In group classes, you rotate partners – it’s expected and encouraged. You’ll meet new people and learn to adapt to different partners, which makes you a better dancer.

?

“I’ll look stupid”

Everyone in a beginner class is in the same boat. Experienced dancers remember what it was like to start and are supportive, not judgmental. The dance community is incredibly welcoming!

?

“I’m too old/young/unfit”

Partner dancing is for everyone. Our students range from teenagers to retirees. The dances we teach adapt to your physical abilities – you go at your own pace.

Leader or Follower?

The Leader

Traditionally danced by men, but anyone can lead! The leader initiates movements and navigates the dance floor. It’s like being the storyteller – you decide what happens next.

“Leading is not about controlling – it’s about inviting.”

The Follower

Traditionally danced by women, but anyone can follow! The follower interprets the lead and adds their own styling and expression. It’s like jazz improvisation – you respond and contribute.

“Following is not passive – it’s an active conversation.”

Many dancers eventually learn both roles – it makes you a better dancer!
